Mercury retrograde in 2027

Mercury turns retrograde three times in 2027:

  • February 9 to March 3, beginning in Pisces and moving back into Aquarius.
  • June 10 to July 4, beginning in Cancer and moving back into Gemini.
  • October 7 to 28, beginning in Scorpio and moving back into Libra.

Mercury retrograde is the best-known event in popular astrology. "Retrograde" describes how the planet appears to move backwards from our point of view on Earth. Astrologers associate Mercury with communication, travel and paperwork, and treat its retrograde periods as a time to review, re-read and slow down. Plenty of people simply use the dates as a reminder to back up their phone and read contracts twice, which is sensible in any month.

Mars starts the year in retrograde

Mars turns retrograde on January 10 in Virgo and stays retrograde until April 1, moving back into Leo along the way. Mars retrogrades are less frequent than Mercury's, so this is one of the more notable features of the year. Astrologers link Mars with drive and action, and read its retrograde as a period for reworking plans. Virgo and Leo are the signs in the spotlight.

No Venus retrograde

Venus does not turn retrograde at all in 2027. If you follow Venus cycles, that makes 2027 a quieter year on that front.

The four eclipses of 2027

There are two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses.

  • February 6: annular solar eclipse in Aquarius. An annular eclipse is the "ring of fire" kind, where the Moon covers the centre of the Sun and leaves a bright ring. The annular path crosses Chile and Argentina.
  • February 20: penumbral lunar eclipse in Virgo. In a penumbral eclipse the Moon passes through the outer part of Earth's shadow, so the dimming is subtle.
  • August 2: total solar eclipse in Leo. This is the headline event of the year. The path of totality crosses Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia.
  • August 17: penumbral lunar eclipse in Aquarius.

The July 18 full moon in Capricorn only grazes the edge of Earth's penumbra, so some catalogues list it as a very slight penumbral eclipse and others don't. We count four.

In astrology, eclipses are read as turning points, and the signs they fall in are said to feel them most. In 2027 that puts the focus on Aquarius and Leo, with Virgo receiving one lunar eclipse. If you plan to watch either solar eclipse in person, use proper eclipse glasses and follow guidance from an astronomy organisation.

Where the slow planets are

The outer planets move slowly, so they set the background tone astrologers use for a whole year.

  • Jupiter enters Virgo on July 26, having spent the first part of the year in Leo. Astrologers associate Jupiter with growth and opportunity.
  • Saturn is in Aries and is retrograde from August 9 to December 23.
  • Uranus is in Gemini and turns retrograde on September 15, staying that way until February 12, 2028.
  • Neptune is in Aries and is retrograde from July 9 to December 15.
  • Pluto is in Aquarius and is retrograde from May 8 to October 17.

That means Aries hosts both Saturn and Neptune, Gemini hosts Uranus, and Aquarius hosts Pluto plus two eclipses.

Which signs are most active in 2027?

Going by the calendar alone:

  • Aquarius: two eclipses, Pluto, and the end of the first Mercury retrograde.
  • Leo: the total solar eclipse, and Mars retrograde moving back into the sign.
  • Virgo: Mars retrograde begins here, a lunar eclipse in February, and Jupiter arrives in July.
  • Aries: Saturn and Neptune both in residence.
  • Gemini: Uranus all year, and the June Mercury retrograde ends here.

The remaining signs each have their own moments. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces each host the start of a Mercury retrograde, and Libra the end of one.

How to use this calendar

You don't need to plan your life around these dates. A simple approach is to copy them into whatever planner you already use, and treat the retrograde windows as prompts to double-check details and the eclipses as natural points to pause and take stock.
