Zodiac Compatibility Chart: How All 78 Pairings Work

Most zodiac compatibility charts give you a grid of hearts and crosses and no explanation. This guide shows you the reasoning underneath, so you can look at any two signs and understand why astrologers call them an easy match, a challenging one, or an odd couple.

One thing up front: compatibility in astrology is a tradition and a conversation starter. It isn't a prediction. Plenty of "difficult" pairings are happy and plenty of "perfect" ones aren't.

Why 78 pairings?

There are twelve signs. Each sign can pair with eleven others, and since Aries with Leo is the same pairing as Leo with Aries, that gives 66 mixed pairings. Add the twelve same-sign pairings, such as Taurus with Taurus, and you get 78. A complete compatibility chart covers all of them.

Building block one: the four elements

Each sign belongs to one of four elements.

  • Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Described as energetic, direct and enthusiastic.
  • Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Described as practical, steady and grounded.
  • Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Described as social, curious and ideas-led.
  • Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Described as emotional, intuitive and private.

The traditional rule is that signs of the same element understand each other easily, and that fire pairs well with air while earth pairs well with water. The image usually given is that air feeds fire and water nourishes earth. Fire with water, or earth with air, is said to take more effort, because the two approach life from different starting points.

Building block two: the three modalities

Each sign also has a modality, which describes how it tends to act.

  • Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. The starters.
  • Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. The sustainers.
  • Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. The adapters.

Two signs of the same modality share a style, which can produce friction. Two cardinal signs may both want to lead. Two fixed signs may both refuse to budge. Two mutable signs may both wait for the other to decide.

Building block three: distance around the wheel

Here's the part most charts leave out. Picture the twelve signs in a circle. The number of signs between any two tells you how astrologers read the pairing. There are seven possible distances, and every one of the 78 pairings falls into exactly one.

Same sign (12 pairings). You're alike. That brings instant understanding, and it also means you share the same blind spots.

One sign apart (12 pairings). Neighbours, such as Aries and Taurus. Neighbouring signs differ in both element and modality, so they can feel oddly unfamiliar. Astrologers often describe this as a learning pairing.

Two signs apart (12 pairings). For example Gemini and Leo. These are always the compatible elements, fire with air or earth with water. Traditionally a friendly, easy-going match.

Three signs apart (12 pairings). For example Aries and Cancer. These share a modality and have clashing elements. Astrologers call this a square: plenty of spark, plenty of tension.

Four signs apart (12 pairings). For example Taurus and Virgo. These share an element. Astrologers call this a trine, and it's the classic "easy" match.

Five signs apart (12 pairings). For example Aries and Virgo. Nothing in common by element or modality. Usually described as the pairing that needs the most adjustment, and often the most intriguing.

Opposite signs (6 pairings). Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces. Opposites share a modality and have compatible elements. The saying is that opposites attract, and the tradition holds that each has what the other lacks.

Add them up: 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 6 = 78.

How to read any pairing in a minute

Take two signs and ask three questions.

  1. What are their elements? Same or complementary elements suggest ease. Clashing elements suggest effort.
  2. What are their modalities? The same modality suggests a shared style and possibly a tug-of-war.
  3. How far apart are they on the wheel? Use the list above.

Try it with Leo and Scorpio. Fire and water: clashing. Both fixed: both stubborn. Three signs apart: a square. The traditional reading is an intense, magnetic match in which neither side backs down easily.

Now Cancer and Pisces. Both water. Cardinal and mutable: one leads, one adapts. Four signs apart: a trine. The traditional reading is an easy emotional understanding.

Friendship counts too

Compatibility isn't only romantic. The same reasoning applies to friends, siblings, flatmates and colleagues. Many people find the friendship reading more useful, because it gives a light-hearted way to talk about why one friend plans everything three weeks ahead and another turns up when they feel like it.

What a sun-sign chart can't tell you

A sun-sign pairing compares one placement in each person's chart. A full birth chart has a Moon, a rising sign and every planet, each in a sign of its own. Two people whose sun signs look mismatched may share a moon sign, and that's why astrologers who compare whole charts often reach a different conclusion than a simple grid.

So use a compatibility chart as an opening, not a verdict. It works best as a way to name differences kindly: "you're a fixed sign, of course you won't change the plan."
