The 2027 Eclipses: Dates, Signs and What They Mean

Eclipses are the dates astrologers circle first when a new year's calendar comes out. This guide covers the four 2027 eclipses we have verified dates and signs for: two solar and two lunar, falling in two tight pairs in February and August. For each one you will find the date, the type, the zodiac sign and how the tradition reads it.

Dates are given in US Eastern Time and can fall a day earlier or later depending on where you live.

Solar and lunar eclipses: the difference

A solar eclipse can only happen at a new moon, when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun. A lunar eclipse can only happen at a full moon, when Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon and its shadow falls on the Moon's face.

Most new and full moons are not eclipses, because the Moon's orbit is slightly tilted and the three bodies usually miss a perfect line. A couple of times a year the alignment is close enough, which is why eclipses arrive in "seasons" roughly six months apart, and why a solar and a lunar eclipse tend to come as a pair two weeks apart. That is exactly the shape of 2027: one pair in February, one in August.

The three types you will meet in 2027

• Annular solar eclipse. The Moon is a little too far from Earth to cover the Sun completely, so a bright ring remains around it. This is the "ring of fire".
• Total solar eclipse. The Moon covers the Sun's disc entirely for those standing in the narrow path of totality.
• Penumbral lunar eclipse. The Moon passes through the faint outer part of Earth's shadow. The dimming is subtle and easy to miss if you are not looking for it.

February 6: annular solar eclipse in Aquarius

The first eclipse of the year is also the Aquarius new moon. Aquarius is a fixed air sign associated with friends, communities, causes and the future, and Pluto is in the same sign throughout 2027. Astrologers treat a solar eclipse as an amplified new moon: a beginning, but one where the full picture is not visible yet. The traditional reading is a fresh chapter in who you spend time with and what you belong to.

Three days later, on February 9, Mercury turns retrograde, and Mars has been retrograde since January 10. It is a crowded fortnight, and a good one for watching and noting things down before you commit.

February 20: penumbral lunar eclipse in Virgo

Two weeks on, the Virgo full moon is a penumbral lunar eclipse. Virgo is a mutable earth sign associated with routines, work habits, health habits and getting the details right. Astrologers read a lunar eclipse as an amplified full moon: something comes to a head, becomes visible, or reaches its natural end.

The traditional reading is a clear-out of a routine that has stopped working. Mercury, Virgo's traditional ruler, is retrograde at the time, which doubles the theme of reviewing how your days are arranged.

August 2: total solar eclipse in Leo

This is the headline eclipse of the year. It is the Leo new moon, and it comes one week after Jupiter leaves Leo for Virgo on July 26. Leo is a fixed fire sign associated with self-expression, creativity, pride, play and being seen.

The traditional reading is a reset in how you show up: what you make, what you put your name to, what you are willing to be seen doing. Because Leo and Aquarius sit opposite each other on the zodiac wheel, astrologers read the February and August eclipses as two halves of one story about the individual and the group, the stage and the audience.

August 17: penumbral lunar eclipse in Aquarius

The last of the four is the Aquarius full moon. It falls in the same sign as the February 6 solar eclipse, and astrologers would read it as the follow-up: whatever began in your friendships, communities or long-term hopes in February has had six months to develop, and now you can see what it has become.

Which signs are said to feel the 2027 eclipses most?

Aquarius and Leo carry three of the four eclipses between them, and Virgo has the fourth. Astrologers also include the other fixed signs, Taurus and Scorpio, because they sit at right angles to Leo and Aquarius on the wheel. How to use eclipse dates in a planner

Eclipse advice from astrologers is unusually consistent, and it is the opposite of what most people expect.

1. Observe first. Many astrologers suggest skipping your usual new moon intention on a solar eclipse and simply writing down what is happening.
2. Write on the day and again a week later. Eclipses are read as slow reveals. The second entry is often the more interesting one.
3. Compare the pairs. Re-read your February 6 page on August 17. They share a sign, and the comparison is the whole point.
4. Use the next ordinary new moon for fresh starts. In 2027 that is March 8 in Pisces after the February pair, and August 31 in Virgo after the August pair.

Never look at the Sun directly without certified eclipse glasses or a proper solar filter, including during an annular eclipse. Whether an eclipse is visible from where you live, and at what time, depends entirely on your location, so check an astronomy organisation or observatory for local viewing details.
