How to Read a Birth Chart for Love: Venus, Mars and the Seventh House

When people ask what their birth chart says about love, they usually expect one answer. There are three main places to look: Venus, Mars and the seventh house. Each describes a different part of how you relate, and reading them together gives a far more useful picture than a sun sign compatibility grid.

This guide shows you where to look and how to turn what you find into plain sentences. You will need your chart, and your birth time if you want the seventh house. If you have never read a chart before, start with how to read a birth chart for beginners.

Step one: Venus, how you love

Venus is the planet of affection, attraction, pleasure and taste. In a love reading it describes what you find appealing, how you show you care, and what makes you feel appreciated. Its symbol is a circle on top of a cross.

Venus never appears far from the Sun in the sky, so your Venus sign is always within two signs of your sun sign.

Venus through the signs

  • Venus in Aries: direct and enthusiastic. Likes the chase and says so.
  • Venus in Taurus: affectionate and steady. Shows love through comfort, food and touch.
  • Venus in Gemini: playful and talkative. Falls for a good conversation.
  • Venus in Cancer: nurturing and protective. Shows love by looking after you.
  • Venus in Leo: generous and demonstrative. Loves grand gestures and loyalty.
  • Venus in Virgo: thoughtful and practical. Shows love through small acts of help.
  • Venus in Libra: charming and considerate. Wants harmony and an equal partner.
  • Venus in Scorpio: intense and private. All or nothing.
  • Venus in Sagittarius: adventurous and honest. Needs freedom and laughter.
  • Venus in Capricorn: serious and committed. Shows love through reliability.
  • Venus in Aquarius: friendly and unconventional. Wants a friend first.
  • Venus in Pisces: romantic and compassionate. Loves without keeping score.

Venus by house

The house Venus sits in is read as where affection tends to find you. Venus in the third house suggests connection through conversation and everyday surroundings. In the ninth, through travel or study. In the eleventh, through friends and groups. In the tenth, through work or public life.

Step two: Mars, how you pursue

Mars is the planet of drive and desire. In a love reading it describes what you go after, how you take the initiative, and how you behave in a disagreement. Its symbol is a circle with an arrow.

The quickest way to read Mars is by element.

  • Mars in fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): bold and spontaneous. Makes the first move. Argues loudly and gets over it quickly.
  • Mars in earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): patient and persistent. Shows interest through consistent effort. Slow to anger and slow to forget.
  • Mars in air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): flirts with words. Attracted to minds. Wants to talk a disagreement through.
  • Mars in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): led by feeling. Indirect about what it wants. May go quiet when upset.

Venus and Mars together

Compare your Venus and Mars signs. If they share an element, or are in the friendly pairings of fire with air and earth with water, astrologers say what you want and how you go after it match. If they clash, say Venus in cautious Capricorn and Mars in impulsive Aries, you may recognise a pattern of rushing in and then wanting to slow down, or the reverse. Neither is a problem. It is simply worth knowing about yourself.

Step three: the seventh house, who you partner with

The seventh house is the house of committed partnership. It sits directly opposite the first house, so the sign at its start, called the descendant, is always the sign opposite your rising sign.

Astrologers read the descendant as the qualities you look for in a long-term partner, and often qualities you have not fully claimed in yourself.

Rising sign Seventh house sign Drawn to a partner who is
Aries Libra Calm, fair and diplomatic
Taurus Scorpio Deep, loyal and intense
Gemini Sagittarius Adventurous, honest and broad-minded
Cancer Capricorn Steady, responsible and mature
Leo Aquarius Independent, original and a good friend
Virgo Pisces Gentle, imaginative and accepting
Libra Aries Decisive, direct and energetic
Scorpio Taurus Grounded, patient and reliable
Sagittarius Gemini Witty, curious and talkative
Capricorn Cancer Caring, warm and home-loving
Aquarius Leo Warm, confident and expressive
Pisces Virgo Practical, thoughtful and organised

Planets in the seventh house, and its ruler

If you have planets in the seventh house, astrologers read them as themes in your partnerships. The Moon there suggests a need for emotional closeness. Saturn suggests taking commitment seriously and perhaps slowly. Jupiter suggests relationships that broaden your world.

An empty seventh house is completely normal and says nothing about whether you will have relationships. Look at the planet that rules the descendant sign instead, and note where it sits. With Libra on the seventh, find Venus. With Capricorn, find Saturn.

Two more places to look

  • The fifth house covers romance, dating and fun, the early, light-hearted stage. The seventh is commitment. The two can look quite different in the same chart.
  • The Moon shows what you need to feel emotionally safe. Many astrologers consider it as important as Venus for long-term compatibility.

Putting it into one paragraph

Fill in the blanks:

"I show love in a [Venus sign] way, I go after what I want in a [Mars sign] way, I am drawn to partners who are [seventh house sign], and to feel safe I need [Moon sign]."

For example, Venus in Taurus, Mars in Gemini, Sagittarius on the seventh and Moon in Cancer: affectionate and steady in love, flirts through conversation, drawn to adventurous and honest partners, and needs a home base to feel secure. An astrologer might point out the pull between wanting freedom in a partner and security at home, and that naming it is half the work.

Comparing two charts

Comparing charts is called synastry. A simple first pass:

  1. Compare your Venus with their Mars, and their Venus with your Mars. Compatible elements are traditionally read as attraction.
  2. Compare your Moons. Compatible elements are read as emotional ease.
  3. Check whether their Sun, Moon or rising sign is your seventh house sign.

Our zodiac compatibility chart explained shows how to judge any two signs by element, modality and distance.

What a chart cannot tell you

A chart cannot tell you whether a relationship will last, whether someone is right for you, or when you will meet anyone. It offers vocabulary for your own patterns, and what you do with that is your decision. Treat it as a prompt for honest conversation, not a verdict.
