Mars Retrograde 2027: What Astrologers Say About January to April

2027 opens with Mars in retrograde. It turns retrograde on January 10 in Virgo, slips back into Leo along the way, and turns direct again on April 1. Those dates are in US Eastern Time and may fall a day either side depending on where you live.

Mars retrograde gets far less attention than Mercury retrograde, mostly because it is rarer. This guide covers what it is, how astrologers read the Virgo and Leo parts of it, and a sensible way to plan your first quarter around it.

The dates

  • January 10: Mars turns retrograde in Virgo.
  • During the retrograde: Mars moves back from Virgo into Leo.
  • April 1: Mars turns direct in Leo.

That is close to twelve weeks, covering nearly the whole first quarter of the year.

What Mars retrograde is

Like every retrograde, it is an effect of perspective. Earth is on a faster, inner orbit, and roughly every two years we catch up with Mars and overtake it. For a couple of months, Mars appears from Earth to move backwards through the zodiac. Nothing about the planet's actual motion changes.

Mercury is retrograde about three times a year, so most of us are used to it. Mars does it far less often, and each retrograde lasts much longer, which is why astrologers treat it as one of the defining features of any year it appears in.

What Mars stands for in astrology

Mars is the planet of drive: energy, effort, ambition, competition, courage and anger. It describes how you go after what you want and what you do when something is in your way. It is the traditional ruler of Aries, and in older astrology of Scorpio too.

When Mars is retrograde, astrologers describe that drive as turned inward. The standard reading is that pushing harder works less well than usual, and that the weeks are better spent asking whether you are pushing at the right thing. Effort is reviewed, not cancelled.

Part one: Mars retrograde in Virgo

Virgo is the sign of method. It is associated with daily routines, work habits, skills, tidiness and being useful. Mars in Virgo is traditionally described as the efficient worker: energy spent on lists, systems and getting the small things right.

With Mars retrograde here, the traditional themes are:

  • a routine that has quietly stopped working
  • being busy without being effective
  • perfectionism that slows a project down
  • a workload that needs trimming, not better time management

It lands in January, when many people are already trying to rebuild their habits. The astrological advice fits the season: before adding a new routine, find out which old one to remove.

Part two: Mars retrograde back in Leo

Leo is the sign of the heart. It is associated with creativity, confidence, play, pride and recognition. Mars in Leo is traditionally the performer: energy spent on what you love and want to be known for. Jupiter is also in Leo for this whole period, staying there until July 26, so Leo is a crowded and emphasised sign in early 2027.

When Mars backs into Leo, the question shifts from "how am I working?" to "what am I working for?". The traditional themes are:

  • a creative project you set aside and want to pick up again
  • pride getting in the way of asking for help
  • wanting credit for something, and noticing how much that matters to you
  • remembering what you used to do for fun

What else is happening during it

The retrograde does not run alone. Inside the January 10 to April 1 window you will also find:

  • January 22: full moon in Leo.
  • February 6: annular solar eclipse in Aquarius, the sign opposite Leo.
  • February 9 to March 3: Mercury retrograde, from Pisces back into Aquarius. For these weeks, both Mercury and Mars are retrograde.
  • February 20: penumbral lunar eclipse in Virgo.
  • March 8: new moon in Pisces.
  • March 22: full moon in Libra.

February is the densest stretch. Astrologers would call it a month for patience. There is more detail in our guides to Mercury retrograde 2027 and the 2027 eclipses.

Which signs are in the spotlight?

  • Virgo and Leo, where the retrograde takes place.
  • Aries and Scorpio, the signs Mars traditionally rules. Aries also has Saturn and Neptune all year.
  • Pisces and Aquarius, the signs opposite Virgo and Leo, where astrologers expect the theme to show up through other people.

If you know your rising sign, look at which houses Virgo and Leo occupy in your chart. That is where an astrologer would expect the review to take place. Our guide to the twelve houses shows you how to work that out.

A practical plan for January to April

You do not have to put your year on hold. Treat the first quarter as a planning and repair season, and the dates give you a ready-made structure.

  1. Early January: audit, do not add. List your regular commitments. Mark each one "keep", "change" or "drop". Resist starting three new habits at once.
  2. The first weeks: fix the method. This is the Virgo part. Simplify one routine. Finish one task that has been half-done for months.
  3. The later weeks: return to what you care about. This is the Leo part. Reopen a creative project. Do one thing purely because you enjoy it.
  4. Watch your temper. Mars is the planet of anger, and astrologers associate its retrograde with old irritations resurfacing. Notice them, write them down, and wait a day before replying.
  5. Pace yourself. Treat your energy like a budget during these weeks. Steady and unspectacular beats heroic and exhausted.
  6. From April 1: go. Mars turns direct, and the Aries new moon follows on April 6. Aries is Mars's own sign, so astrologers would call that new moon one of the cleanest starting lines of the year. If you want a "new year" date for a big goal, this is a good candidate.

Common questions

Is Mars retrograde bad?

No. In astrology it is a period with a particular job: reviewing where your effort goes. Plenty of people find the slower pace a relief after December.

Should I avoid starting anything new?

The tradition suggests testing and revising new projects during the retrograde and launching them afterwards. Real life does not always wait, and that is fine. If something has to start in February, start it, and expect to adjust the plan as you go.

Does it affect everyone the same way?

Astrologers say no. How much you notice depends on where Virgo and Leo fall in your own chart.
